Thatch
Your lawn will have built up a layer of fibrous material on the top of the soil surface and at the base of the grass, this is known as Thatch.
Thatch is made up cuttings, dead leaves, stems and stolons of both grasses and weeds which decays over a period of time. However more often than not the build up is much quicker than the decaying process, resulting in something similar to a door mat lying between the soil surface and the base of the grass.
The door mat effectively prevents moisture, nutrients and fertiliser reaching the root of the grass which starves the grass but creates a wonderful environment in which moss thrives.
How do we conquer thatch?
We take care of thatch in two ways. Firstly we remove the surface thatch by mechanical scarification and secondly break up the sub surface thatch by hollow core aeration. These two processes ensure your lawn will maintain its ability to absorb oxygen, moisture and essential nutrients that are required to maintain a healthy green lawn.
